Dr. D Drives!

Several weeks ago, we found ourselves with a "free Sunday afternoon."
Not a normal occurrence around here, but one that must be maximized
The sun was shining, the skies were crystal blue.
The air was very warm and crisp.
And The Boss and Dr. D had a focus.

Yes, it's that time of year again.
Parallel parking The Gang-mobile between garbage cans.

Over and over and over. Almost all afternoon.

Dr. D's a natural behind the wheel!

I can hardly believe my brown-eyed boy turns 17 soon.
OR that he'll be getting his license in a matter of weeks.
Really, it seems like just yesterday he was zooming around
the backyard on his "Big Wheels" bike
pretending to be "Jake Justice" and saving the world.

Let's just hope real driving experiences
do little to resemble his former "zooming"
OR Jake's roaring to the rescue!

Playdoh Art

This is how the younger members of The Gang occupy themselves on summer nights.

Look at all the GREEN sports paraphernalia.
My little Eagles fans :)

Li'l Empress was baking strawberry muffins to share with Momma.

LadyBug got all artsy and did her rendition of "The Scream."

Ummm, and apparently, this is how The Boss
occupies himself on a lazy summer night!

Happy Friday, Folks!

We're Nesting Again!

No matter what other changes go on in our lives, one thing remains a constant: we are always working on SOMETHING around this house. The latest project is to start the switching of bedrooms that is necessary to move Li'l Empress into a bigger room suitable for sharing with her mei-mei.  We've been talking about it for months, kind of laying the plans out for the kids, prepping Li'l E and introducing the topic as matter-of-factly as we could, for the sake of helping her see that it's one of the "okay" changes in life. So, while The Boss is job hunting and has some free-er time than the normal pace of a full-time job, we decided it was wise to get started now. We are trusting the Lord for a career position very soon and trying to be sure that there are fewer pressures and "to do's" on his list to accommodate the learning curve that comes with any new job placement.

So, Saturday afternoon, the kids cleaned the baseboards and window sills of both the affected rooms and began packing up Baby Blue Eye's front bedroom and Li'l E's smaller back bedroom.

Li'l Empress's room - Before

Baby Blue Eyes' room - Before, sorta...
Two months ago, I sold all the fire dog and fire truck pics and poster
thinking we'd have started this project much sooner.
I didn't know about all the "surprises" that would distract us
for the last month.

We watched Li'l E carefully (without saying anything to her or the other kids) through the processes of packing up and moving her bed into her brother's room, as we know big changes like this can sometimes trigger anxieties. And frankly, as tired as we are, neither of wanted to be up in the middle of the night with a freaked out four-year old if we could avoid it. She did great, until it was actually time to crawl into the actual bed in her soon-to-be-actual room. Then, she got a little anxious. But we talked about it right away, just matter-of-factly phrasing it as a sleep-over for several days with her brother and as great practice for sharing the room someday soon with mei-mei. She calmed right down and went from her classic over cute "I'm okay" mode into a state of peace and settled right into bed like a champ. I take that as a little victory, considering that all the other changes that have been going on in the house this month have definitely required extra patience and prayer for her to manage. That's a whole 'nuther post for another day....

She definitely was expressing a bit of concern
about the big changes
that were happening to her room.

Nobody is really sure what to call this.
Is it still BBE's room? Is it Li'l E's room yet?
They have fun trying to figure that out when they talk about it.

I won't tell you everything about the project just yet, rather, I'll leave you with a little bit of a peek to see who of you can figure out what we are doing in there. It shouldn't be too hard, for those of you who know our Baby BlueEyes.

I'm quite excited about the plans for this room.
And Baby BlueEyes is OVER.THE.MOON.

Poor kid - this was the only gift he "really, really, really" wanted for his big 10th birthday. Back in Sep.TEM.ber. Ummm, yeah. Slacker parents. I know.  But really. We still hadn't totally figured out who was moving where and when to accommodate our little Brynna (who didn't even have a name yet, let alone a place to sleep!). So, slacker? Maybe. Indecisive and inconclusive? Definitely.

Keep your eyes peeled, there's more fan-tastic photos of the progress coming soon.

Did ya like how I dropped a big ole
hint on ya there? In that last line?
I know, I know.
I'm da bomb.....

It took me forEVAH to come up with
that little teaser cuz I??? Am. so. fried.
Friends should let friends blog fried.
It's just not pretty.

Sunday Snapshot {bye week}

Sunday Snapshot

It's a "bye week" for our beloved Eagles. So instead of gathering around ye olde tv, stuffing our faces with unhealthy "football food," and yelling our brains out together, we sat at the dinner table like civilized folk. After a hearty meal of Creamy Garlic Shrimp over Parmesan Polenta (OOOOOHHHHH, yes, it was good. You have no idea how good!), The Gang dispersed to individual pursuits. I thought it might be fun to take a walking tour around the place to let you peek in on how The Gang spent the unfootball family day.

Shaggy set up some garbage cans
and parked my van out on the street.
To practice parallel parking.

The Boss watched from a safe location.

He was very focused and measured his marks
very carefully.
He is determined to nail this skill.

 I had to stop watching.
I think I was making him nervous.
And when he got that close to my baby, I mean, my van
I got nervous myself.

There's never a truly non-football day for this guy.
He watched the other games for a little while.

But this game wasn't interesting enough for him.
So he went to the other tv and rocked the Madden
for a while instead.

LadyBug prefers her solitude most days.
So she headed off to practice her clarinet.
I think I may have forgot to mention
that she made third chair in her jr. high Wind Ensemble.
We are so proud.

I have no pics of Baby BlueEyes because he spent the entire afternoon playing across the neighborhood with his friends. He will sleep good tonight. After a run with me to the grocery store and then a long shower to de-grime himself, that is!

Li'l Empress practiced "Jingle Bells" for a while on her
kitty piano. But that got boring.
So she headed outside and helped The Boss
plant the pretties and weed the garden.
But that got boring.
So she rode her bike for a while and pretended to race
Shaggy while he drove back and forth for parking practice.

Apparently all that parking practice really wore him out.
I caught him napping in his semi-finished room.

And while LadyBug and I snuck out for a quick run to purchase curtains
for the semi-finished room, I hear that The Boss stole a quick nap too.

So.... That's how The Gang spent the bye week.
The Eagles will be back next week and so we'll
be back in our family huddle 'round the tv.
Hopefully cheering our brains out for our team.

If you stopped by as part of Sunday Snapshot

Wordless Wednesday {Dr. D}

My Dr. D has earned a new definition to his bloggy name. No longer will he be known as Dr. D for "Doolittle." That ship sailed a long, long time ago. I'm just finally getting around to fixing it...

NOW? He's Dr. D for "DEFENSE!"

That's right. At Monday night's game, his first game back since his hand injury in the middle of Sept, my boy snagged his first interception!!!!! Yes, this football momma was screaming her brains out!

(This pic is actually from that game in Sept. when he injured his hand.
Our camera battery died shortly after kick-off this week. Ugh.)

Way to Go, Dr. DEFENSE!
His team is undefeated, with only two or three more games to go.
I love being a football momma!

that is rarely truly wordless,
head over to 5 Minutes for Mom.
Leave me a comment and
I'll come by to say hi!

Gotta Get My Groove Back

I wasn't even sure what to title this. Or where to start to get myself back into the swing of regular blogging....

I mean, I could go with the "bad blogger" theme, beating myself up for the woeful neglect of my little blogging community of peeps.  But I beat myself up enough about far more weighty things, like bad hair cuts (Heh. Keep reading...) and impulsive emotional eating. And all that self-flagellation in the public blogosphere would make me want to eat more chocolate. Which, I think we all agree, is pleasant but not a permanent solution to well, blogging irregularities.

Or I could go the stream-lining route and lead you all to believe that the lack of blogging is directly related to the re-prioritizing of my time and my energies toward making my home more efficient and more productive. But that would show itself false by one quick glance at the piles of paperwork and the un-fiinished editing project(s) still parked on my counter.

I could, with a little stretching, head down the pious path. Tell you all that the Lord has been nailing some of my personal issues to the Cross, re-working my heart and my mind toward His plans for my days and my hours bent on further glorifying Him. That I've been too busy praying and leading my three little day-time charges into endless hours of praise and worship at the feet of Jesus. But that would just be, well, pious. And a gross exaggeration of what my days lately have actually looked like. And gross exaggerations are, well, Not pious. So there's a big contradiction goin' on there that doesn't sit well. (Instead, picture referee uniforms, whistles, and all! kinds! of distraction techniques being winged about everywhere!)

Truth is, I'm struggling. I'm working to find my new groove. To develop a new routine with lots of new factors played in and accounted for in the process. And every.single.time. I think that this new routine is starting to hum along, a hiccup occurs. Normally, I can deal with hiccups in the schedule fairly well. NOT, mind you, that I like them. Or even adapt to them easily. But I get over the initial angst and move on. It's what moms do. There is little choice in the matter, when considering the six other folks that these hiccups include... 8 if you add Little Gal and Little Guy into the mix.  Which I have to do, considering that they are here for the majority of the week.

I'll say it again, it's a good, good thing that those two cuties are so flexible and easy-going. They've had to deal with the hiccups in the house right along with the rest of the Gang. And I must say, they handled this week's big hiccup fantabulously. The big hiccup of which I speak was Dr. D's hand injury from Monday afternoon's football game. That meant a morning off and on the phone and emails galore: with the school nurse, the coach, the trainer, The Boss, the sister, and the pediatrician. All just to coordinate a quick (hahahahaha) trip to the pediatrician. That resulted in a not-so-quick trip to the orthopedist. Seems that the loss of feeling in two of Dr. D's fingers during said injury was enough of a concern that the docs involved needed x-rays and consultation with the specialist. Thankfully, on so many levels, there is no break. Just a deep muscle/tendon/nerve bruise that made for some ugly swelling and limited movement for the week. Play for this week's big game is doubtful but he's not out for the season.

Another minor hiccup (that did NOT feel minor at the time!) was a last minute run to the salon to have my bangs trimmed and blended.  I loved the long sweeping bangs across my forehead but they got too thinned out in my last cut and the humidity of late has been creating little frizzy curls across the forehead. So before I left for a weekend at Women of Faith with my sister, I ran out to have them trimmed and blended. Those were the words I used, repeatedly to the stylist.  That is NOT what I got when I left.  Let's just say, when the stylist stops and stares at what she just did in dismay (Oh, yes, that was dismay and confusion I saw on her face. It was.), you pretty much know that it's NOT gonna be a good hair cut.
My history with bad hair cuts is well-documented here. And here, part II... Cuz yes, a bad hair cut is never just a bad hair cut for me. Seriously. I don't know what my problem is. And saying that is not me asking for your input. Thankyouverymuch :)
So this time, the hair cut debacle wasn't really about forgiveness. Although, I probably do need to letitgo and forgive the poor gal for her mistake. Turns out, after some contemplation and introspection (Ugh, I hate it when I do that.) it was really about, well, about life. Real, gritty, dirty, life. Mistakes happen. Ideas and plans get thwarted, even miscommunicated. Stylists have no style. (Ooops, that was snarky. Sorry!) But it's life.

And that, my friends, is the real reason I'm so erratic and neglectful of my blogging. Life. I am starting to think that the new normal around here will show itself in its own good time. And along the way, hiccups to the plan will have to be dealt with accordingly.

I guess I am just going to have a lot more time to deal with those hiccups, big or small. You know, since my uber-short hair takes all of five minutes to wash, dry, and style.

Heh. Heh. Sob. sigh...

Sunday Snapshot

In this season of life, where our older kids are starting to find their passions and we're able to help them pursue those passions, we are finding great joy.  In particular, The Boss is LOVING being a "football dad."  He loves the adrenaline rush, the free-flowing testosterone that rushes and oozes all over the fields, the utter man-growl that comes out of him when our boy gets his hands on the ball.

And now, The Boss is getting to be a "football dad" times 2. Yup, Baby BlueEyes has joined the local Upw@rds program for flag football.

So last Monday night, BBE had his first practice. The Boss, Dr. D, and BBE shoveled dinner down their gullets and rushed out the door, all pumped and excited for drill night. Cuppa' joe in hand, The Boss wandered up and down the sidelines, watching the little guys pass and catch. Chatting it up with the other dads, doin' the dad-versation about who looks good and who's got the arm this year.

Till one of our friends' son pointed out what The Boss was holding in his hand.

Here's a close up, in case you missed it.

Heh. Heh.

You can't see it, but that mug is full of testosterone.
I swear!

Sunday Snapshot

My three boys got a chance this weekend
to immerse themselves in the things that they love.

Dr. D's first official season of high school football
has begun. He's #26 this year.
This is from his first scrimmage.
Just 10 plays each - offense and defense.
But he got his hands on the ball a few times.
And picked up some really nice yardage for the team.

This Momma was cheerin' loud and proud.
I'm already lovin' the chance to yell my brains out
on the sidelines. He can't hear me through all that padding.

Later, The Boss took Shaggy to one of his favorite
music stores for an end of season inventory sale.
Shaggy got to play some seriously top o' the line drum sets.
His passion for the drums has expanded.
This summer, he's been dabbling in music theory
and teaching (re-teaching) himself some technique skills.

And Baby BlueEyes?  Well, at almost 10 years old,
his passion is to be with and be like his brothers
and his Daddy. Whenever and However.
He went along for both rides and was a happy camper
All. Day. Long.

The fact that he made his Daddy and I laugh out loud
with this face was just icing on the cake for our little guy!

"It's A Speed Play, Mom"

On the way home from football practice the other day, Dr. D was telling me about a new play that the team added to its repertoire.

Well, he didn't use the word "repertoire."
I think I'm the only one in this house that uses that word.

Just like I am the only one in my house that uses
the grocery list to write down depleted items.  Ahem.
But I digress.....

Anyway. He told me about this play. Apparently he is a key player in this strategy of play. It seems that after the snap, the QB (Oh, sorry. That's football talk for quarterback. See how I dazzled you with my knowledge there?! Heh.) is supposed to hand off the ball to the WB (Wingback. Dr. D's favorite position on this sophomore team.) and the WB is supposed to run around the outside and head for the endzone, "straight at the LB."

Ummm. That's "LB" as in LINEBACKER.
As in really big, beefy dude on the opposing team. The big one.

"Oh. Yay," I said weakly. Visions of backboards and neckbraces and flat little Dr. D's flashed through my head.

Just for a second.
I know. Oh, me of little faith.

He must have seen my face change. He grinned. And said, "It's a speed play, Mom. As long as I'm fast, I'll be okay."

Ummmm. Yeah.

"You mean, as long as you are faster than the linebacker, you'll be okay."

Big grin.

He was thoroughly enjoying
my discomfort. Brat!

"Yup. That's what I mean."

Ugh. It's gonna be a long, long season.

Football Season Is ON!!!!

This Eagles-lovin' family is THRILLED to be gearing up for the start of the 2011 NFL season. This morning, a fun little cartoon celebrating the end of the lock-out went up on the official site of the Philadelphia Eagles.  You really ought to go by and check it out.

And I have decided that if I ever have the opportunity to have a cartoon made of ME? I want this cartoonist to work the same magic on my physique that he/she worked on Coach Reid.  LOL!

Take a moment and pause at 1:01 - that greatness in action?! That flying leap by #81? Cartoon'd here, yes. But completely realistic and totally possible again this year.

That, my friends, is my guy. I'm on the look-out for my very own #81 jersey.

And I'm gonna say it now - he is the man to watch this year.

Jason Avant. You heard it here.

Sunday Snapshot

Well, I'm back from my self-imposed break. You missed me, didn't ya? We had a unusually busy holiday season for our Gang, with travelling to both sets of parents and hosting family in between the stops. Unfortunately, we also had some sickness following us on all our various sundry stops along the way. The Boss is (hopefully) the last of us to suffer through a nasty head/chest cold that has been dogging the household since the middle of December. He always gets it the worst, even though mine always turns to a sinus infection right away. He should be on the upswing by the end of today, I'm praying....

Ni Hao Y'all

My Sunday Snapshot is all about football. In addition to our raging, rabid Eagles-mania here at the Gang's house, The Boss and Dr. D also joined a fantasy football league with one of their uncles and a couple cousins. It's been fun for them, connecting with the cousins and there's been lots of old-fashioned ribbing along the way.

I'm not entirely sure I like the way it's changed how we watch games:
all that stat-checking and rooting for one player vs. just rooting for our team.
But that's alright, I guess.
I root for my Eagles and occasionally the random underdog here and there.

Anyway. Dr. D found out last night at the end of our decidedly lackluster game
with the Cowboys that he won the fantasy league's championship.

He gave himself a "Gator-ade" bath in the driveway to celebrate.
Yeah. Ummm, I nixed the artificial stuff and he used a tiny cup of regular water.
After all, it was really, really cold out there.

He was jubilant. Even in the virtual world of sports,
he's super competitive and NEEDS to excel.
He also loves to ham it up and make us all laugh
at his antics. He was in rare form last night.

And, it appears, he needs to congratulate himself.
This is a funny trophy he made in an elementary art class quite a few years ago.
He pulled it out tonight and paraded it around the house,
chanting as if he won some national championship or something.

He even made himself a screen banner that he can look at everyday.
Or at least until he has something else for which to applaud himself!

Come on over and join the Sunday Snapshot fun.
Even if you post on Monday like me!

Leave a comment, let me know you were here.
And I'll drop by later. After the coffee takes effect
and I've adapted to the idea of Monday.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

Today, Dr. D has his first (loooong-awaited) game of his freshman football season.  He was pretty focused all summer long, conditioning here at home with an eye toward being ready to "hit somebody."  We also signed him up for a local football camp run by one of his former coaches, and he really enjoyed honing his skills. And "hitting somebody."  He even got Li'l Empress into the fun by practicing three-point stances and leading with her shoulder and "hitting somebody" low and solid. Yeah, he likes the hitting. Me, not so much.  And while I'm sure I'll never love watching him hit or be hit like HE does, I'm learning not to cringe every time.  Or at least I'm trying . . .

I don't mind admitting I was a little surprised by passion for all the preparation for the season. There's been lots of studying of the play book. In fact, that white binder was his constant companion on our car trips. And we logged a lot of hours in car trips this summer.  He was intense about it. Willingly studying and memorizing. Even though I've always known that he was capable of such dedication and focus, once he found something he loved, I was still surprised by the ferocity of his attention. And very proud of it, too.

(Is there some way I can show him how Algebra I is applicable in creating and strategizing plays for a freshman football team? Cuz that would neatly wrap up a lot of our mother-son homeschooling conversations, for sure!)

So. He came home from practice the other day and proceeded to tell us that he's starting this season. Starting offense, at wingback. Starting defense, at safety. And he's on punt return. AND covering kick-offs and punts. That all translates to a lot of "hitting someone."  Lots of someones.  Unfortunately, for this slightly nervous momma, I'm football savvy enough to also know that it means there are potentially a lot of "someones" who will be looking to hit him.  Oy.

I think it's safe to say that he's not going to see a lot of down-time during the games.  And as long as he's on that field, running, dodging or "hitting someone" - neither will I.

Neither will I.

Pancake Protest

It was a big weekend for The Gang. We had a delightful day on Saturday with most of my family in town sharing a meal together. The Boss filled and hid the kids' Easter baskets and Li'l Empress really got into it this year. She was delighted with her stash. Worship at church was so refreshing, and Li'l Empress even spent some time in her 2 & 3 year old class while I sat in the perimeter of the room. She participated in everything the other kids did, keeping a watchful eye to see that Momma was still lurking nearby. That was great progress for us!

The rest of our Sunday was quiet, with The Boss puttering around working on little projects toward finishing the kitchen. The kids played in the sunshine. I napped on the couch between chapters in my book and picking through my Easter candy. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the peaceful, low-key day together.

UNTIL.

Until I hopped on F@cebook while the kids were watching Extr&me H*me M@keover and spied an internet rumor that Baby BlueEye's beloved Donovan McNabb was being traded to the Washington Redskins.  It all went downhill really fast from there.

It took a minute for Baby BlueEyes to process the news, which I broke as gently as I could once Dr. D and I verified the rumors. Once it sunk in, he cried off and on for the rest of the night. Judging from his puffy red eyes this morning, I think the poor little fan cried himself to sleep.

And this morning, he's still glum. Still morose.  Still feeling "done wrong" by the Eagles franchise.

He has gone activist on me. In support of his beloved #5 and in protest of the (in HIS opinion) lousy business decisions of the Eagles leadership, this is what I found on his plate this morning at breakfast.

I must add, that his views are not representative
of the whole Gang.
The rest of us are taking a "wait and see"
approach to this move.

That's What I'm Talkin' About!

It was a good night to be an Eagles fan.

(Although I confess, I headed to bed in the third quarter.
After sleeping through the half-time analysis.)

Let's go all the way!

Wordless Wednesday

It was a muddy, muddy game.
But they went out on a big V.
30-0.

Hut, Hut, Hike!

Football season may officially be over for Dr. D, but we are regularly treated to live re-enactments of the sport's greatest plays ever. I'm talking Hall of Fame material here. Enjoy!

And on a completely unrelated note, but NO less important or enjoyable: Baby Christopher has been taken off all his blood pressure meds, had his chest tube removed AND was extubated successfully - all since Saturday! God is moving in this precious little man's body and the best news of all is that his sweet momma finally got to hold him for the first time yesterday. Pray for continued strengthening of his little lungs and endurance for Momma and Daddy as they continue to live away from home! He's making great strides but still needs plenty of time to rest and heal and move forward. Thanks for all your support and prayers - and for spreading the word to pray!

Wordless Wednesday

Are you ready for some football?

Goooooo Chargers!!!!!!
First football game of his career, today. Rain or shine.

Please forgive the grainy nature and small size of these pics.
The Boss took them with his phone and no matter what I tried,
I couldn't manipulate them at all. And it's too early to get that frustrated!
